Freeform Cancels Drama Recovery Road After One Season

Freeform is checking out of Recovery Road.

The cable channel has canceled the freshman rehab drama, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Executive producer Holly Sorensen broke the news on Twitter late Friday.

Based on the YA novel of the same name by Blake Nelson, Recovery Road was one of two dramas the channel unveiled this past January shortly after its name change from ABC Family. The other, supernatural adaptation Shadowhunters, has been a strong ratings performer for the network and earned a second season renewal in March.

Freeform’s name change is part of its renewed focus on “becomers” ages 14-34 as the channel attempts to move away from the family brand it has long been associated with. It was also recently that long-running family drama Switched at Birth would end with its upcoming fifth season, which is not set to debut until 2017. Additionally, Pretty Little Liars — one of the channel’s biggest success stories — appears to be inching closer to an end date as it heads into its seventh season following a major time jump in the storytelling.

The cancelation also comes as Freeform prepares to launch several new dramas, including the supernatural horror series Dead of Summer from the creators of Once Upon a Time and Guilt, an Amanda Knox-themed murder mystery drama.
